The Future of Central America
As a way of turning a problem into an opportunity, Viron P. Vaky’s “Central America Gives Us An Opening” (Op-Ed Page, March 30) presents a sensible and humane approach that’s long overdue.
After nearly eight years of pouring millions of dollars down a rat hole to wage a proxy war against the sovereign country of Nicaragua, policy-makers in Washington would do well to now heed Vaky’s advice.
Better yet, when a new Administration moves into the White House next January it would be wise to let Vaky put his ideas to work in his old job at the State Department as assistant secretary of our inter-American affairs. Maybe he could then clean up the mess Elliott Abrams has made in Central America.
