Symphony Bill Will Include 3 Winners of Competitions

A work commissioned for the Orange County Centennial and three young competition winners will be featured in the South Coast Symphony’s 1988-89 season.

Richard Henn’s “Overture for the Orange County Centennial” will receive its first performance on Jan. 21, 1989, at Santa Ana High School. Henn is known locally for his scores for the Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters for the past nine years.

Competition winners will include: on Nov. 9, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, winner of the 1981 Young Concert Artists International Auditions; on Jan. 21, 1989, baritone John Atkins, winner of the 1987 Western Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions; and on March 4, 1989, pianist Jose Feghali, gold medal winner at the 1985 Van Cliburn Piano Competition.

The season, led by music director John Larry Granger, will be split between Santa Ana High School and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Concerts will be at 8:15 p.m. Here are dates, location and programs:

--Oct. 1 at Orange Coast College: Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (“Linz”), Bartok’s “Two Portraits for Orchestra” and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Moshe Hammer, the concertmaster.

--Nov. 19 at Santa Ana: Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin,” Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony and Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Thibaudet.

--Dec. 11 at OCC: Holiday concert with repertory and soloist to be announced.

--Jan. 21, 1989, at Santa Ana: Henn’s “Overture for the Orange County Centennial” (first performance), Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 (“New World”) and Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder,” with soloist Atkins.

--March 4, 1989, at Santa Ana: Overture to Rossini’s “Barber of Seville,” Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 (“Inextinguishable”) and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, with soloist Feghali.

--April 29, 1989, at OCC: Courtly Dances from Britten’s “Gloriana,” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Purcell’s Sonata in D for Trumpet and Strings, and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, both works with soloist Anthony Plog.
