A senior education official acknowledged that China plans to reduce the number of its students sent to the United States, but he denied that the reduction would be drastic or affect overall study abroad. The official, Huang Xinbai, a senior member of China’s State Education Commission, said 4,600 government-funded students will be sent to the United States this year. The figure could represent a one-third cutback, since U.S. officials have put the total as high as 7,000 in recent years. China has been concerned over the large number of students who fail to return from overseas.
