The health minister of Nepal set fire to a pile of 35,000 cigarette butts, youths in Rome offered flowers and apples to smokers who threw away their cigarettes, Cuba suspended the sale of tobacco for the day and smokers in China tried ointments and shock therapy to get through the first worldwide “No Tobacco Day,” sponsored by the World Health Organization. Although West Germany chose to get the word out to the public by showing television footage of cancer patients, most governments were content with sponsoring information campaigns against smoking. In Geneva, the WHO awarded 40 medals to people and organizations it said promoted a tobacco-free society, including former President Jimmy Carter.
