U.S. Intercepts 2 Soviet Bombers

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Two Soviet bombers flew to within 63 miles of North America’s largest oil fields at Prudhoe Bay before U.S. jet fighters turned the Russians around and steered them home, the Air Force reported today.
Two F-15 Eagle jet fighters launched from Galena in central Alaska intercepted two Soviet Bear G bombers Thursday 98 miles northeast of Barrow, said a spokesman at the Alaska Air Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.
