College Roundup : UCI Women Win in Houston Tennis Tournament

Courtney Weichsel edged Gill Oakenfull in singles to lead the UC Irvine women’s team to a 7-2 victory over Lamar Thursday in the first round of the University of Houston tennis tournament at Houston.

Weichsel, Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Oakenfull in two sets, 7-6, 7-5. She has won six of her last seven matches.

Irvine’s No. 2 singles player, Kathy Rose, defeated Isabel Coetzer, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Irvine is 14-5.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

University of San Diego 5, Chapman 2--Chapman’s No. 1 singles player, Miles Walker, defeated San Diego’s Scott Partridge, 6-4, 6-2, at Chapman. The only other Chapman (15-9) win was when Olivier Amerlinck beat Dave Stewart in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

In Golden State Athletic Assn. softball:

Azusa Pacific 5-2, Southern California 0-1--In the first game, Kristen Cook and Debbie Dunnigan each drove in a run for visiting Azusa Pacific (11-8 overall, 5-3 in conference). Dana Swingrover won both games, allowing six hits in each. Christine Wright drove in Southern California College’s lone run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the first inning of the second game. SCC is 9-17 and 2-6.

In volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Chapman 0--Brian Kehe had 13 kills as host Irvine defeated Chapman, 15-3, 15-5, 15-11. Corky Carpenter had 12 kills for Irvine (4-13, 3-0)
