Jim Jordan, ‘Fibber McGee’

Share

Being over 40 and under 50, I cannot appreciate “Fibber McGee and Molly” as much as someone “well over the half century mark,” but I still retain some fond memories of it and other programs from the “golden age of radio.”

I truly loved the tribute to Jim Jordan by Times staff writer Burt Folkart (Part I, April 2) which also included much nostalgia on radio as well.

Radio! Besides comic books, I fashioned my heroes such as the Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, Red Ryder and Captain Midnight from that magnificent machine which sat in our front room.

I cherished the prizes I’d receive from sending in box tops from cereal sponsors, and sometimes I’d even eat the cereal! I saw Woody Allen’s “Radio Days” four times, and I’d like to see it again!

On occasion I’ve purchased tapes of old radio shows, and I’ll still tune in to old broadcasts of “Dragnet” and “The Long Ranger,” but I for one would love to see another golden age of radio, which would also take much of today’s youths away from television and allow them to use their imaginations and to think!
