A tribal militiaman in the southern Philippines gunned down a 70-year-old Roman Catholic priest from Chicago after accusing the clergyman of harboring criminals, the military reported. Defense Secretary Fidel V. Ramos ordered an investigation into the killing of Father Carl Schmitz by Saguin Munday, 29, the head of the local government militia, who surrendered to authorities after the slaying. A military report said Schmitz died Thursday from multiple gunshot wounds suffered in the attack inside his rectory in Koronadal, a provincial capital 620 miles south of Manila. The report said the shooting followed a heated argument over the priest’s willingness to give sanctuary to tribal criminals.
