Clarifying on ‘AIDS Rally’

Thank you for your article “AIDS Quilt Comforting U.S. Grief” (by Garry Abrams, March 22). The quilt is a national monument, a silent appeal for help, and your article contributed positively to the concerns of its creators and benefactors.

There is one thing in the article that I would like to clarify. The “massive AIDS rally” in Washington in October that you spoke of as one of the two occasions of the quilt’s full display was not an AIDS rally. It was The March on Washington, a nationally organized march for gay and lesbian civil, social and political rights.

The event was largely ignored by the non-gay press. More than 500,000 lesbians and gays, their friends and supporters, gathered from across the U.S. to make their presence known. The insensitivity of the national press was a great disappointment to the community.
