The World : Sikhs May Have Missiles

Share

Indian security forces fear that Sikh extremists have acquired at least four U.S. Stinger missiles, giving them the capability of shooting down aircraft. An intelligence source in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar said he believes the surface-to-air missiles have been acquired in the last 30 days by extremists fighting for a Sikh homeland in the north Indian state of Punjab. The source said the Stingers were diverted from supplies delivered through Pakistan to moujahedeen rebels fighting the Soviet-backed government in Afghanistan. Indian security sources have reportedly launched search operations in districts close to the border with Pakistan in an effort to track down the weapons.
