Vice President George Bush suggested today that American Jews should vote for him rather than a Democrat because “I’m a good friend of Israel.”

Speaking to reporters during a tour of an IBM office here, the vice president was asked to comment on remarks by New York Mayor Edward I. Koch that New York Jews should not vote for Democrat Jesse Jackson in the state’s April 19 primary.

“Listen, we’ve got enough problems on our own side to get into the Democratic nominating process,” Bush said.

“Ed Koch is entitled to his opinion. Each candidate is entitled to run on his own record. There is no point in my fine-tuning Ed Koch’s comments,” Bush said.

But, he said, Jews should consider voting for him. “I think everyone should vote for me. Besides that, I’m a good friend of Israel.”
