Mike Pigg, 24, of Arcata, Calif., defeated the other co-favorite, Mark Allen, 29, of Vista, Calif., by more than six minutes in winning the $105,000 America’s Paradise Triathlon at Christiansted in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Kirsten Hansen, 26, of Denver, won the women’s competition, finishing more than 13 minutes ahead of Paula Newby-Fraser of Encinitas, Calif.

The field of 332 swam 1.9 miles, cycled 59 miles, then ran 12.4 miles on a warm, humid day. Pigg’s time was 4:07:14.

Allen finished in 4:13:30, and Scott Tinley, 31, of Encinitas, was third in 4:16:09.

Pigg earned $15,000. Hansen, who was 20th overall with a time of 4:38:05, got $10,000.
