Jim Newman, who was dismissed as head basketball coach at Cal State Los Angeles and planned legal action over the move, has reached a settlement with the school, both parties announced. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Newman, 52, was released as the school’s coach after the 1986-87 season, his fourth year on the job. Newman, who is black, charged that the dismissal was racially motivated.

Under Newman, Cal State L.A. had a 50-55 record.
