A renegade Irish nationalist guerrilla known as the “Border Fox” was sentenced to 40 years in prison for kidnaping and mutilating a Dublin dentist in a vicious abduction that shocked Ireland. Dessie O’Hare, once Ireland’s most wanted man and suspected by police of involvement in up to 27 murders, pleaded guilty to kidnaping Dr. John O’Grady. The tips of the dentist’s little fingers were chopped off with a hammer and chisel by O’Hare to support a vain bid to secure a $2.4-million ransom. Four others in the gang received jail sentences ranging from seven to 40 years from Dublin’s heavily guarded anti-terrorist court. O’Hare said that he had abducted the dentist to further the cause of Irish republicanism.
