The World : Argentina Stalled by Strike

Share

Argentina was virtually paralyzed by a one-day general strike against the economic policies of President Raul Alfonsin, called despite the failure of 11 previous strikes to force changes. Government sources said about 80% of the work force heeded the General Confederation of Labor’s call for the 24-hour strike. The state-owned Aerolineas Argentinas announced the cancellation of all its domestic and international flights, and the normally bustling port of Buenos Aires was inactive. The labor federation said the strike was called to protest the government’s plan to seek an agreement with the International Monetary Fund that would call for deep structural reforms in the nation’s economy over a three-to four-year period.
