Regarding “California Breakup” (by Susan Squire, March 13): By some (including members of my immediate family) I am considered a pre-eminent specialist in the field of family law. I have served as the chairman of the executive committee of the State Bar of California and spent about one-half of my life in Department Two. Accordingly, I have some knowledge of its inner workings. I also know Arlene Colman-Schwimmer well. Simply stated, your article “told it as it is.”

I was especially appreciative of the tenor of the article, stressing that it is the angry clients (not simply aggressive attorneys) that contribute to the acrimony and the legal costs associated with the breakup of a marital relationship. Hopefully, parties in turmoil will read your article and recognize the fact that they can control their own destinies and not simply “pass the buck” to their legal advisers and the courts.
