Labor leaders denounced the Administration for encouraging a “tragically deficient” performance by the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Officials of the United Steelworkers of America, the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union and the United Auto Workers told the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee that new steps are needed to bolster on-the-job safety standards for workers and to strengthen penalties for employers that ignore those standards. OSHA officials are scheduled to testify before the committee later this week.
