Dance Troupe Doubles Budget

San Diego Performances has doubled its budget for 1988-89 to offer an extended season that includes performances by seven world-class dance organizations, teaching workshops and more matinees for the Great Performances for Kids series.

The $2.2-million season will kick off Oct. 6 with the return of the San Francisco Ballet, scheduled to dance its new “Swan Lake” as well as a repertory program. The troupe will be back in November with its “Nutcracker,” featuring San Diego ballet students, as it did last year.

Martha Graham’s dance company is due in November as well, and then the season takes a hiatus until late February, when Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theatre performs works from its repertory.

Mikhail Baryshnikov’s American Ballet Theatre, which broke box office records during its 1986 appearance, will give seven performances in late March, including a full-length ballet to be announced.

The Feld Ballet, booked for a 10-day residency that includes four public performances and several appearances for schoolchildren, will be in town in mid-April.

The Joffrey Ballet will bring its all-Diaghilev program as part of the six-performance schedule beginning May 30, and the Frankfurt Ballet closes the season in mid-June with works by its American director, William Forsythe. This marks the first American tour for the Frankfurt.
