Share

Glendale Federal Savings & Loan Assn. and Jay Milam, vice president and branch manager of Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan Assn., each received Burtis E. Taylor Community Education awards in a presentation Tuesday before the Board of Education.

The awards, named for Glendale’s longtime superintendent of schools who retired in 1982, are given annually to businesses, organizations and individuals who have contributed to the Glendale Unified School District.

Glendale Federal recently has sponsored the Thomas Jefferson Character Education Program to help children in each of the district’s 19 elementary schools develop positive self-images. It also sponsored a program called “I Have a Tale to Tell” to help students in elementary and junior high school improve their writing skills.

Milam, a graduate of the Glendale Unified School District, helped develop the business-education Partnership Program, which has grown to more than 20 adopt-a-school relationships. He also helped initiate Fidelity Federal’s annual Distinguished Student Awards, which recognize the achievements of junior high, senior high and community college graduates in Glendale’s public and parochial schools.
