Malibu : Cityhood Hearing Scheduled

The Malibu Committee for Incorporation, the group sponsoring a cityhood initiative for the coastal community, will hold a public forum Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Webster Elementary School.

The group is awaiting a report from the Local Agency Formation Commission, the agency that handles incorporation issues, on the economic feasibility of cityhood for Malibu. The LAFCO report must be made public at least five days before the agency’s May 25 public hearing on the report.

The incorporation committee is scheduled to rent buses to take cityhood proponents to the public meeting, much as opponents of a proposed $86-million regional sewer system in Malibu did when more than 1,000 people arrived at a public hearing last October to protest the project.

Ruth Benell, LAFCO’s executive director, said the agency is expected to complete its report soon. Written comments on incorporation must be submitted to the agency no later than May 24, she said. Those statements can be mailed to the LAFCO office, Room 383, Hall of Administration, Los Angeles, 90012.

LAFCO already has ruled that the proposal to turn a 21-square-mile area of Malibu into a city will have no significant environmental impact. As a result, no environmental impact report on the proposal will be necessary.

The LAFCO public hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors’ chambers at the Hall of Administration, 500 W. Temple St., Los Angeles.
