First Chicago Corp. announced that it will buy the downtown retail banking business of rival Continental Illinois Corp., which has declared its intention to pull out of retail banking. The price--which covers 40% of Continental’s retail deposits and 80% of its outstanding consumer loans--has not yet been determined. Continental Illinois, once a leading Midwest bank and now recovering from near-insolvency in 1984, also is selling five suburban retail banks.
