Joel Moffett, the Chapman College student whose play “The Coloring Box” triggered a dispute over on-stage nudity on the campus, will join the production staff of the Grove Shakespeare Festival for its “King Lear” this summer. Festival executive director Thomas Bradac said Moffett, who is taking a course on Shakespeare that Bradac teaches at Chapman, had asked to be part of the production, which opens Aug. 26. His exact role has yet to be determined, Bradac said. Meanwhile, Ronald Muchnick, artistic director of the Skylight Theatre, an Equity Waiver house in Hollywood, said casting is under way for the Skylight’s unexpurgated version of “The Coloring Box,” expected to open late next month.

More Grove Shakespeare Festival news: Veteran actor Benjamin Stewart (who will play the Fool in “King Lear) will give one-man readings of “Venus and Adonis,” evenings from July 7-23. And, Chevron USA has donated $15,000 to help underwrite this year’s festival, which opens June 24 with “Richard II.” Also on the schedule: “A Comedy of Errors.”

For the third straight year, Estancia High School in Costa Mesa has taken Best Production honors in a Saddleback College High School Theatre Festival. Friday, Estancia’s “The Dining Room” topped entries from 10 other Orange County schools. Acting awards at the festival went to Chris Allen of St. Margaret’s in San Juan Capistrano, Deborah Cook and Marcus Wallburger of Estancia, Randy Helm of San Clemente, and Stacy Hamblin of El Modena (in Orange). The crew of San Clemente’s “The Actor’s Nightmare” won best technical honors. More than 400 students attended the all-day festival in McKinney Theatre on the Mission Viejo campus. Veteran comic Pinky Lee was guest performer.
