School Board OKs Land Deal for Las Virgenes

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved transferring 15 acres of Woodland Hills property, which is the site of a new housing development, to the Las Virgenes Unified School District.

The action means that youngsters who move into new single-family homes near Mulholland Heights will attend Las Virgenes schools instead of Los Angeles schools.

Las Virgenes officials asked that the property, southeast of Mulholland Highway and half a mile east of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, be transferred to its jurisdiction because it is surrounded by an area already served by Las Virgenes schools.

In addition, a Las Virgenes school--Chaparral Elementary--is across the street from part of the property.

There are no Los Angeles schools within walking distance of the area, Los Angeles district officials said.

As an incentive to transfer the land to the Las Virgenes district, the developer of the property promised to donate $150,000 to the Los Angeles district. The amount is about equal to fees the developer would have had to pay the Los Angeles district.
