Dukakis Wins Utah Caucuses by Wide Margin
Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis swept to an easy victory over the Rev. Jesse Jackson in the Utah presidential caucuses, collecting a large majority of the state’s 23 Democratic delegates.
Unofficial results with 94% of the vote counted in Monday night’s caucuses showed Dukakis with 7,550 votes, or 71%, compared to 1,682 votes, or 16%, for Jackson. About 1,231 voters, or 11%, were uncommitted.
Those percentages would leave Dukakis with 19 Utah delegates to the Democratic National Convention and Jackson with four.
Counting the three “super delegates” who have endorsed him, Dukakis’ total Utah count would be 22 delegates.
Republicans had planned a non-binding presidential preference vote but abandoned the idea after Vice President George Bush virtually locked up the GOP nomination. Instead, Republicans voted on their preference for vice president and whether they favor holding a Western regional primary in 1992 similar to the South’s Super Tuesday this year. Results of the Republican balloting will not be available for several days.
