Newport Pharmaceuticals International, a Newport Beach-based diversified health care company, reported a loss of $190,000 for the first quarter ended March 31, compared to a loss of $801,000 for the three months ended April 30, 1987. Comparisons reflect the company’s change to a calendar year. Revenue more than doubled to $8.5 million from $4.1 million, reflecting the acquisition of America’s Pharmacy, a mail service prescription drug company, in April, 1987. Newport’s loss is primarily attributed to costs incurred in conducting clinical trials on its drug, Isoprinosine, for the treatment of pre-AIDS conditions.
