Britain is out of the America’s Cup, but Australia may be in.

An Australian challenge for this summer’s competition at San Diego was lodged by a syndicate led by Iain Murray, who skippered Kookaburra III in its 4-0 loss to Dennis Conner in the final series at Fremantle last year.

Murray said his boat will be equal in dimensions to that of the official challenger from New Zealand.

Murray’s move followed by a day New Zealand’s rejection of the British challenge because Blue Arrow syndicate leader Peter de Savary planned to build a nonconforming boat.

New Zealand’s Michael Fay and the San Diego Yacht Club must agree to Australia’s challenge, but neither had an immediate response.
