Cornelia Connelly High School girls fanned across the county one day this week, doing volunteer work and learning about the problems of the poor.

All of the 265 students at the all-girl Catholic high school took part Wednesday in the school’s annual Service Day. Groups of Connelly students went to 19 areas of the county to do volunteer work for agencies ranging from the Salvation Army’s Service Center in Anaheim to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Preserve in Huntington Beach.

“Some of it was down-and-dirty cleanup work,” said Dianne Brockmueller, a spokeswoman for the school.

Brockmueller said Service Day is a tradition at Connelly: “This gets the girls out to see the problems of the world around them, and it provides a chance for them to be of service to others . . . not just for the day but for the rest of their lives. Many of our service projects, such as visiting a nursing home, are year-round efforts, but on this particular day we concentrate on getting all the students out.

“They learn that a lot of people out there are really having problems.”
