Sydney Maree, a former world record-holder at 1,500 meters, said he disapproves of attempts to ban fellow South African-born runner Zola Budd as a method of showing disapproval of South Africa’s apartheid policy.

Maree, who is black, said of Budd, who is white: “I do not feel the world should do what they are doing to Zola Budd. Zola Budd has paid her dues.

“As an athlete, she deserves an opportunity to compete internationally like all of us. I feel very, very upset with what is going on.”
