‘Terror Has Its Own Itinerary’
Powers says that “terrorism and intransigence are the last resort of those who are beaten and don’t know it.” But he ends on a depressing note that the best thing to do about “war trying to happen” is get out of the way.
He failed to ask the next question. Why have the possibilities for black liberation in South Africa, of an independent Palestine, of economic and social justice around the globe become the “impossible dream?”
We and our leaders must realize that the economic and political health of all peoples in an interdependent world is in our self-interest and of vital importance to our national security. To reclaim our future, instead of weapons and war, we need to reorder our priorities and use our energies and economic power to address the basic human needs for survival and well-being that underlie this desperation in an abundant world.
