Amdahl Corp. will announce this week its most powerful mainframe computer, surpassing all other machines compatible with the mainframe computers of International Business Machines, analysts say. Said analyst Jeffrey Canin of Hambrecht & Quist: “They will have a real coup in having the highest performance machine out there in the IBM-compatible world.” Sunnyvale-based Amdahl would not comment on the announcement, which it has scheduled for Tuesday. Canin said the new Amdahl mainframe in its high- performance 5890 series, which is compatible with IBM’s 3090 series, will be twice as powerful as the current generation of mainframe computers.
