A British ferry company crippled by a 13-week walkout sailed its first strike-breaking vessel past pickets and on to Belgium. On shore, strikers chanted “Scab! Scab!” A crowd watched from the cliffs of Dover as the Pride of Bruges, with P&O; European Ferries Ltd.’s emblem on its side, passed into the English Channel on its way to Zeebrugge, Belgium. The crew of 80 was driven aboard on four buses with police escort as pickets taunted them. The National Union of Seamen is striking over a company plan to reduce staff, impose longer shifts and increase responsibilities for workers.
