Apple Computer chief John Sculley was paid $2.1 million in 1987 and headed a list of eight Silicon Valley executives who topped the $1-million mark, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News. Electronics industry executives in the region averaged an 11% raise. Sculley’s pay represented a substantial increase from the $1.7 million in salary and bonuses he made the previous year when he also led Silicon Valley’s best-paid bosses. The chairman, chief executive and president of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple far outstripped the pay of runner-up David T. Mitchell, president and chief operating officer of Seagate Technology of Scotts Valley, Calif. Mitchell made $1.4 million in salary and bonuses. The newspaper based its survey on required disclosures by public companies of cash compensation for their five highest-paid executives.
