The federal government has fined Mercedes-Benz of North America $5.5 million for failing to meet federal fuel economy requirements in its 1985 model cars, it was announced Tuesday.

Mercedes-Benz has 20 days to challenge the enforcement action by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and seek to have it overturned by the agency’s parent Transportation Department after hearings before an administrative law judge.
