Local News in Brief : Graffiti Cleanup Plan

Share

The Los Angeles City Council has instructed the city attorney’s office to look into the feasibility of requiring property owners to remove graffiti or face being charged for having the city do it for them.

The program, proposed by Councilman Ernani Bernardi and prompted by the failure of building owners to clean up graffiti, would be modeled after the city’s weed abatement program.

Under that program, property owners are cited for excessive weed growth, which is considered a fire hazard, and then are charged a high fee for city crews to clean up weeds if the owners fail to do so themselves within a time limit.

The city forces the property owner to pay by adding the weed removal fee onto the property owner’s property tax bill.
