Local News in Brief : Irvine : UCI Physics Professor Honored for Research

UC Irvine’s Academic Senate has named physics professor Norman Rostoker as the recipient of its 1988-89 Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award.

Rostoker, who has been at UCI 16 years, has focused his research on plasma physics--work that has potential application for controlled nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion is the reaction that powers the sun.

The containment of super-hot, ionized gases called plasma has posed a problem for researchers attempting to harness fusion. Rostoker has worked on devising ways of containing plasma using magnetic fields and particle beams.
