Prison guards in Ireland voted to end their first national strike after three weeks. A spokesman for the Irish Prison Officers’ Assn. said the guards voted 1,140 to 159 to accept an offer for an independent review of new shift arrangements. The union had said the shifts were imposed without consultation. It also said it wanted government money earmarked for overtime to be used instead to recruit more prison personnel. Irish Justice Minister Gerry Collins welcomed the vote and said talks will be held with guards today to arrange a return to work.
