McDonnell Douglas is recruiting some of the aerospace workers being laid off by its rival, Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co., as the Air Force switches from Lockheed’s C-5B cargo carrier to McDonnell Douglas’ C-17. About 8,000 workers at Lockheed’s Marietta, Ga., plant are expected to lose their jobs by the time the company completes its $6.9-billion contract in early 1989. Workers will be employed in either St. Louis or California.
