Local News in Brief : Laguna Beach : Group Launches Drive Against Recall Actions

Share

A group of Laguna Beach residents announced Tuesday the formation of the PROtect Laguna Committee to fight a recall petition aimed at removing three City Council members from office.

“We’re here to say no to a recall,” committee co-chairwoman Sally Bellerue said at a press conference outside City Hall. “We believe in having good government, and a recall would not lead to good government.”

Frank Newman said letters were mailed Tuesday to about 9,000 residents who voted in the last City Council election in 1986, encouraging them not to sign the recall petition.

“A recall is very divisive in a community . . . sometimes the wounds take years to heal,” Bellerue said.

The recall effort, which began in March, is aimed at Mayor Dan Kenney and council members Robert F. Gentry and Lida Lenney. The group has until June 7 to collect 3,000 signatures for each council member to force a recall election in November. So far, group leaders estimate they have collected 1,800 signatures per council member.

Recall supporters believe the council members are anti-business because of stringent sign regulations and laws prohibiting outdoor store displays.
