Motel 6, the nation’s largest budget motel chain, is looking for an acquisition and is “currently evaluating a number of companies,” President and Chief Executive Joseph W. McCarthy told Dow Jones. The company also plans to add 32 hotels this year and 40 in 1989, he said. McCarthy credited a series of humorous radio ads featuring National Public Radio commentator Tom Bodett for turning around a five-year pattern of declining occupancy at the chain. He said the company expects improved results in 1988.
