Local News in Brief : 100th Birthday for City

Share

A daylong birthday party Wednesday, complete with cake, balloons and a band in the lobby of Compton City Hall, marked the opening of that city’s centennial celebration.

On May 11, 1888, Compton became the seventh city incorporated in Los Angeles County. At the time, Compton’s population was about 500. Today, there are more than 90,000 people in the city, which is trying to transform itself from an urban enclave beset by crime into a redeveloped community through the addition of several shopping centers and an expanded auto mall.

Centennial events are scheduled throughout the year, including an outdoor festival Saturday and Sunday at the Compton Civic Center.
