Plans were announced Thursday for the fast-growing Santa Clarita Valley’s first regional shopping center, a $180-million enclosed mall that eventually will include six major department stores.

The Newhall Land and Farming Co. said the mall will be built on 80 acres near the Valencia Civic Center in the city of Santa Clarita. The two-level shopping center will have about 1.5 million square feet of retail space and about 100 specialty shops.

The shopping center’s first phase, expected to be completed in 1991, will include up to 800,000 square feet with two or three department stores, the company said.
