The Visit to Orange County by Group of High-Ranking Soviets
I feel it is unfortunate that Soviets are permitted to come to this country and, under the pretext of exchange of ideas, use this opportunity to study American thinking and actions (“Soviet Visitors Bring Glasnost With Them,” May 3). But if they do come, then let’s have them meet people of equal footing.
Surely the Dartmouth Conference, Kettering Foundation and Orange County National Issues Forum can find American counterparts to the highly educated, sophisticated Soviets. The people who were picked to interact with the Soviets must have fallen off the proverbial turnip truck. I couldn’t imagine that they would actually make those inane comments.
If the American participants have the slightest inkling of how the Soviet system works, they would realize that any dialogue to ease tensions between the two countries is meaningless. But then, Americans have a reputation for being gullible.
