CAMPAIGN ’88 : Robertson Backs Bush
Pat Robertson formally suspended his Republican presidential campaign Monday and threw his support to George Bush, calling the vice president “a conservative at heart.”
“I entered the race as a champion of conservative values. I entered the race so that I might speak out on the great moral issues of our time,” Robertson told reporters.
Robertson said he would return to the Christian Broadcasting Network empire he founded, probably as chief executive officer. The network has fallen on hard times, and last year suffered a 32% drop in donations, according to CBN officials.
Though he acknowledged that suspending his campaign was tantamount to withdrawing, Robertson said he planned to hold on to his delegates--he has 46 while Bush has more than 1,300--until the Republican National Convention in New Orleans in August.
