TORONTO —
A Canadian who was arrested and detained by Chicago police for five hours after being caught smoking on a smoke-free United Airlines flight was charged Sunday in Illinois with disorderly conduct.
Michael Cunning, 33, of nearby Ajax, Ontario, was on his way to a weeklong business trip in North Carolina and changed planes at Chicago.
Police Lt. Joseph Sofere said Cunning lit a cigarette in the plane’s washroom and, after the smoke detector sounded, he tried to dismantle it. The pilot filed a complaint.
