The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $345,000 grant for San Diego to study whether it should revamp Lindbergh Field downtown or find another site for the city’s major commercial airport, Mayor Maureen O’Connor’s office announced on Thursday.

The comprehensive study, estimated to take 12 to 18 months, will be conducted by the San Diego Assn. of Governments (Sandag) and will explore whether San Diego’s major civilian airport should be moved to Brown Field near the international border or Miramar Naval Air Station, the announcement said.

One advisory committee to be formed will examine airport policies; another will address the technical demands of reconfiguring Lindbergh or moving airport operations elsewhere. Public hearings will be held, the announcement said.

In addition to the $345,000 provided by the FAA, $35,000 will be contributed for the study by Sandag, a spokesman for the association said.
