Local News in Brief : NAACP Chief Resigns
Attorney Raymond L. Johnson Jr., who has headed the 10,000-member Los Angeles branch of the NAACP for the past 3 1/2 years, will resign at the end of the month. He and his family will move to Birmingham, Ala., where he will continue his law practice, NAACP officials said.
Under Johnson’s leadership, the group has helped develop economic opportunities, gang prevention and health programs for the black community. NAACP leaders also have met with the Los Angeles Dodgers to give suggestions on an affirmative-action policy, and have monitored the new Crenshaw Mall project to make sure blacks receive a substantial portion of leasing contracts.
Anthony Essex, a Los Angeles financial consultant, will serve the remainder of Johnson’s term until elections are held in December. Essex has served as a vice president of the local NAACP for the last four years.
