House Speaker Jim Wright (D-Tex.) defended his record in statements to reporters and in a closed meeting with some Democratic colleagues. Wright sought to blunt the impact of a call by the watchdog group Common Cause for an ethics investigation into his financial and legislative activities. In both forums, Wright said that the unusually high royalties he received from a book he wrote that was published by a Texas associate did not violate House rules and that actions he took with federal regulators on behalf of Texas savings and loans were consistent with a member’s responsibilities to his constituents.
