Redondo Beach Mayor Will Run for City Council

Redondo Beach Mayor Barbara J. Doerr, who cannot seek reelection when her term expires next year because of the city’s two-term limit, said last week that she will run for the City Council.

Doerr is expected to challenge City Councilman John Chapman for the District 1 seat. Chapman, first elected in 1985, represents the area bordered by Pearl Street, Camino Real, the Torrance city line south of Redondo Beach and the Pacific.

Chapman was out of town and could not be reached for comment on whether he will seek reelection.

Doerr said the race will, in a sense, have two incumbents vying for the four-year position, which pays $525 a month. Doerr made her remarks in an interview with The Times while attending a victory party for recently elected Councilman Steve Colin.

Councilman Archie Snow, who will have served two terms as the District 4 representative, has announced that he will seek the mayoral post. Mary Davis, former owner of the Portofino Inn, has said that she is also considering running for mayor.
