A federal judge in San Francisco has sentenced Mendocino talk-show host Leon Kowalski to six months in prison for failing to pay $54,000 in federal income taxes in 1982. Kowalski, 47, known to listeners of KMFB-FM as Ed Kowas, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Charles Legge to spend five years on probation and to perform 2,000 hours of community service. Kowalski had pleaded guilty to a single charge of tax evasion. He is to remain free on $50,000 bail until June 20.
