Nearly half of a pool of 100 prospective jurors were excluded from serving in the fraud and perjury trial in Phoenix of former Gov. Evan Mecham and his brother, Willard. The Mechams are accused of violating state financial disclosure laws by concealing a $350,000 campaign loan. The trial proceedings opened May 19. Forty-nine people were ruled out as potential jurors after attorneys and Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan reviewed questionnaires completed by members of the pool. Questioning of the remaining 51 panelists was to continue today. Mecham, 64, was removed from office through impeachment. Of the 49 jurors dismissed, 15 were eliminated because they said they had signed recall petitions.
